HYSTOPOLIS PUPPET THEATRE was founded in 1982 by Michael Schwabe and Lawrence Basgall. Over the last 10 years the Chicago-based company has devoted its energies to establishing puppetry as a vital and legitimate art form. Its productions have ranged from traditional Punch and Judy shows to adaptations of popular fairy tales, to Elmer Ricešs classic 1923 play The Adding Machine. In 1985, Hystopolis moved into the Free Street Community Arts Center, which now houses its offices and 75-seat theater.
